OUR MISSION

Nearly 50 years after taking part in one of the most arduous rallies ever run, the iconic 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, Puff, the Austin Maxi MCE 7G and her Speed Queens are planning to reach their final destination.

In 2020, this little car affectionately known as ‘Puff The Magic Wagon’ with two of her original crew are heading off to Mexico City to finish the rally they started back in 1970. As one of the few, if not only, World Cup Rally cars still competing with her original crew we are looking for sponsors and partners to help us achieve this unique goal.

Follow our preparations and all the excitement as we build up to this extraordinary adventure. Or if you would like to be part of the cavalcade then please click below.

HISTORY

The Austin Maxi was originally picked from the showroom floor in 1969 to be prepared for the hardest ever Marathon Rally the world had ever seen – The 1970 Daily Mirror London-Mexico World Cup Rally.

With over 100 cars starting from London, only the first 70 to arrive in Lisbon would be shipped to South America to continue the rally, and at the end, less than 25 cars were to complete the rally and enter Mexico City.

THE CREW

These three pioneering Speed Queens were invited to be part of British Leyland ‘privateers’ team, a team that included Prince Michael of Kent’s Maxi, crewed by the members of his army regiment, The Royal Hussars and The 17/19th Lancers.

Of the 103 teams taking part in the 1970 World Cup Rally there were only 4 all-female teams and only 13 women competing out of more than 260 competitors.

Today as Puff takes part in so many new adventures, the 3rd seat is offered up in Tish’s honour to other inspiring women drivers and navigators.

Guest crewmembers to date have included Elise and Serene Whyte, Suzanne Barker, Freda Croasdell and Heather Sonnet.
